Tensions escalate in Assam-Meghalaya border dispute

Things got tense at the Assam-Meghalaya border as hundreds of villagers, backed by student groups, protested against Assam's Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for allegedly planting trees on disputed land in Block I of West Jaintia Hills.
The situation escalated quickly, leading police to use tear gas to break up the crowd.

TL;DR

Areas like Block I remain unresolved

Protestors—led by the Khasi Students's Union and local organizations—dismantled structures and uprooted saplings they say were planted without permission.
This is just the latest flare-up in a decades-old border dispute dating back to 1972.
While some progress was made with a 2022 agreement, areas like Block I remain unresolved.
Local officials are urging both sides to keep talking and maintain peace as efforts continue to find common ground.
