What's the story

Several activists of Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) were arrested on Thursday after they allegedly unfurled the Tibetan flag near Bharat Mandapam. The protest was against the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to New Delhi for the BRICS summit. The activists, all Tibetan nationals, were detained from Pragati Maidan tunnel area while protesting against the Chinese delegation. According to PTI, eight or 10 of them were detained from the tunnel.

Protest against presence of Chinese delegation

The protesters had unfurled banners to demand a free Tibet and oppose the presence of the Chinese delegation at the summit.

The incident took place amid tight security arrangements in Delhi for the BRICS Summit.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) had earlier warned of possible disruptions to the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. According to ANI, senior IB sources said that the threats could involve graffiti, drone activity, and attempts to breach VVIP routes.

In Majnu Ka Tila, hundreds took to the streets, chanting, 'You Are Not Welcome.'

The protesters are demanding independence for Tibet, the release of Tibetan political prisoners, and the repeal of China's Ethnic Unity and Progress Law, which rights groups and foreign officials warned could accelerate the forced assimilation of ethnic minorities.

The protest was led by the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC).
