Tribal couple's Hindu marriage valid under HMA: Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court ruled on Tuesday, November 4, that a Scheduled Tribe couple's marriage, done with Hindu rituals like the seven steps (saptapadi), is legally valid under the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA).
This came up after the husband argued that only tribal customs should count, but the court said following Hindu traditions means HMA applies.
Court explains why tribal marriages under HMA
The court pointed out that even though Scheduled Tribes are usually outside HMA rules, if they choose Hindu customs for their wedding, they get the same legal rights as other Hindus.
Backing this up with a Supreme Court example, the judges made it clear: adopting Hindu rituals brings tribal couples under HMA protection—helping respect both tribal identity and access to legal safeguards.
