Born to Kamala and Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi became India's first and only woman Prime Minister in 1966. As a PM, she was known for her unprecedented centralization of power and was named 'Woman of the Millennium' in an online poll organized by the BBC in 1999. She was assassinated this day in 1984 by two of her security guards.
