Twisted tale of murder and betrayal in UP
In Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, 29-year-old Pooja Jatav has been accused of murdering her 60-year-old mother-in-law, Sushila Devi, after a disagreement over selling family land.
On June 24, Pooja allegedly poisoned and strangled Sushila with help from her sister Kamala and Kamala's boyfriend Anil Verma.
The group also took gold jewelry worth ₹8 lakh. What first looked like a robbery turned out to be a planned murder linked to ongoing family property disputes.
Accused charged with murder, conspiracy, robbery
After confessing, Pooja and her accomplices were charged with murder, conspiracy, and robbery.
Anil was arrested in a police encounter; Pooja and Kamala are still in custody as police look into other suspicious incidents involving the family.
Investigators uncovered that Pooja had faced violence in her first marriage and later lived with her late husband's brother Santosh—fueling more arguments over land.
The main trigger for the crime was Sushila refusing to transfer property to Pooja's name.
Police are now checking if similar disputes led to other suspicious deaths in the family.
