Massachusetts teen dies after taking part in 'one-chip challenge'
Recently, a teenager from Massachusetts, a state in the northeastern United States, joined the "one-chip challenge," a viral social media trend that involves eating the spiciest chip in the world. Unfortunately, Harris Wolobah, a tenth-grader, reportedly passed away on the same day he took part in the challenge. An autopsy has yet to reveal the cause of his sad and untimely death.
Here's what the challenge is about
In the "one-chip challenge," participants must eat what is allegedly the spiciest tortilla chip in the world and then wait as long as they can before consuming anything else to ease their discomfort. The chip made by Paqui comes with a warning that it should not be consumed by children and people with allergies or those who are sensitive to spicy food.
Wolobah experienced stomach ache immediately
Wolobah, a student of Doherty Memorial High School, Worcester consumed the Paqui chip at the school, following which he experienced a stomach ache. His mother Lois told NBC 10 Boston that Wolobah started to feel better once he was picked up and brought home. But he was subsequently found unconscious just before leaving for basketball tryouts. When rushed to hospital, he was declared dead.
Paqui chips come with a warning
Paqui's website says that the chip should only be consumed by adults. "After touching the chip, wash your hands with soap and do not touch eyes or other sensitive areas," reads the warning. The chips reportedly contain capsaicin, a naturally occurring substance found in chili peppers. Ingesting it can result in intense coughing, burning sensations in the eyes and mouth, asthma, and vomiting.
'It's not his fault'
Worcester Public Schools superintendent Dr. Rachel Monárrez described Wolobah as a "rising star." "As a mother and educator, I cannot imagine how hard this is on his family, friends and teachers," Monárrez wrote. Douglas Hill, Wolobah's basketball coach mourned his death. "I feel for him, and this is just one of those situations where it's not his fault," he said.
Things to note when trying any food challenges
Prioritize your health and strictly adhere to the set age recommendations. Wash hands after handling spicy items, and avoid touching your face. Consume spicy foods in moderation and keep dairy products handy to mitigate heat. Be mindful of asthma triggers and potential respiratory symptoms; stay hydrated. Do not push your limits, it can be fatal. Lastly, seek medical help if severe symptoms persist.
