Slow computer? Here's how to speed it up
What's the story
If you're still using Windows 10, you may have noticed that your computer is running slower than usual. This can be frustrating, especially when you have work to do. But, before you go out and buy new hardware, there are a few simple tricks you can use to speed up your system without spending a dime. Here's how you can get your Windows 10 computer running like new again.
Tip 1
Disable startup programs
Many programs start automatically when you boot your computer, which can slow down its startup time and overall performance. To manage these startup programs, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click on the Startup tab and disable any unnecessary programs by selecting them and clicking Disable. This will help speed up boot times and free up system resources.
Tip 2
Adjust visual effects
Windows 10 comes with a lot of visual effects that make it look good but can slow it down. To adjust these settings for better performance, right-click on This PC, select Properties, then Advanced system settings. Under Performance, click Settings and choose Adjust for best performance. This will disable non-essential animations and visual effects.
Tip 3
Clean up disk space
Freeing up disk space can do wonders for your system's speed. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool by typing Disk Cleanup in the search bar and selecting it from the results. Choose the drive you want to clean up (usually C:) and let the tool calculate how much space you can free up by deleting temporary files, system cache, and so on. Regularly cleaning up disk space keeps your system efficient.
Tip 4
Update Windows regularly
Keeping Windows updated is important for both security and performance improvements. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to check for updates. Install any available updates as they often come with bug fixes and enhancements that can make your computer run smoother.
Tip 5
Uninstall unnecessary applications
Over time, we tend to install applications that we don't use, which hog resources in the background. To uninstall them, go to Settings > Apps > Apps and features. From here, review the list of installed applications and remove the ones you don't use anymore by selecting them and clicking Uninstall. This frees up precious resources and storage space, improving overall system performance.
