Vitamin C and why you need more of it

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin found in food items like citrus fruits and green veggies. The human body cannot produce this crucial nutrient, and thus have to consume it through dietary sources. An average person should ideally consume 75-90mg of vitamin C every day. Its deficiency can cause scurvy and other health issues. Here's more on this.

    Vitamin C facilitates iron absorption

Iron plays a significant role in the body by aiding the production of red blood cells and transporting oxygen throughout the body. The good news is that vitamin C can help improve the absorption of iron from the diet. In fact, a 100g intake of vitamin C can enhance iron absorption by 67%. Further, it reduces the chances of anemia and other health issues.

    It boosts the immunity

Vitamin C is proven to boost immunity as it is rich in antioxidants, i.e., substances that help combat damage-causing free radicals present in the body. A regular intake of at least 75-90 mg of vitamin C per day can strengthen immunity and reduce your chances of falling sick. Plus, it also helps strengthens your skin's defense system.

It improves vision and cures eye diseases

Did you know that vitamin C can also effectively improve eyesight and help protect the eyes from many severe eye diseases? For one, it can help slow down age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and also lower the risk of cataracts. Further, vitamin C also strengthens the blood vessels in the eye. So, consume more of this vitamin for better vision in the long run.

It can also help fight cancer cells

Cancerous cells that create tumors and impair the immune system can be controlled to some extent with the abundant presence of vitamin C in the body. Vitamin C helps in the formation of collagen, which can protect from cancers that mostly affect the esophagus, larynx, mouth, pancreas, stomach, colon, and the breast. So, consume more citrus fruits and vegetables containing vitamin C. Stay healthy!
