In press-conference, dramatic Akhilesh Yadav says Mayawati's insults are his
  • In yet another proof that relationships change in Indian politics at the drop of a hat, Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati held a joint press conference on Saturday looking ready for the battle that is 2019 general elections.

SP President Yadav gave a dramatic speech in the conference when he said the insults hurled at BSP Chief Mayawati would be seen as his.

    Here's what happened.

  • Mayawati and Akhilesh, who were once bitter rivals, had only good things to say about each other.

Akhilesh praised Mayawati's political experience and said both parties will work together to defeat BJP.

SP and BSP will each contest on 38 seats in the summer elections, Mayawati confirmed. Amethi and Rae Bareli seats were left for Congress President Rahul Gandhi and mother Sonia.

  • "The foundation of this alliance was laid on the day BJP leaders used derogatory words against Mayawati ji. I thank Mayawati ji for her approval to contest on an equal number of seats," said Akhilesh.

  • Further, Mayawati said both parties have decided to put past, like the infamous guest house incident, behind them and have joined hands keeping in mind the demand of the hour.

She noted in 1993 BSP founder Kanshi Ram and Akhilesh's father Mulayam Singh Yadav tried stitching an alliance but it fell apart due to some reasons.

    This one won't, she said.

  • Mayawati, who was the first one to speak to the press, said her party will not ally with Congress anywhere in the country.

She said both BJP and Congress are essentially the same as they signed shady defense deals. Mayawati mentioned Rafale and Bofors.

The 62-year-old leader added she will ensure Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah have sleepless nights.
