Mayawati: News

Mayawati is a politician and National President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and four-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. She is the protégé of Bahujan leader and BSP founder, Kanshi Ram. Mayawati did her BA from Kalindi College and LLB from Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. She did BEd from Meerut University and worked as a teacher in Delhi, when she was approached by Kanshi Ram. Ram founded the BSP in 1984 and groomed Mayawati as his successor. After initial failures in elections, Mayawati entered the Lok Sabha in 1989 from Bijnor constituency along with two other BSP candidates. In 1994, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Mayawati was elected to the Lok Sabha again in 1998 and 1999. In 1995, she became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, becoming the first Dalit woman to hold the office. She was the CM of UP three more times in 1997, 2002, and 2007. Her first three terms were cut short due to coalition compulsions and disturbances. However, in the 2007 Assembly Elections, BSP won the majority, and Mayawati became CM for the fourth time, serving a full five-year term.
