BJP is top advertiser on TV, beats Amazon, Netflix, Trivago

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has surpassed streaming giants Amazon and Netflix in advertising on television, ahead of crucial assembly elections in five states, ET reports. The data, about week which ended on November 16, was revealed in a report of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). In the previous week, BJP held no. 2 position. Congress didn't find a place in the top-10 list.

BJP's advertisements were aired almost twice as Netflix's

The saffron party was followed by Netflix, which was followed by hotel comparison website Trivago. Other major advertisers like Hindustan Unilever, and Amazon came later in the list. From November 10-16, BJP's advertisement aired on television a record 22,099 times. Netflix's advertisement was aired 12,951 times, and Amazon's number was only 8,031. The Trivago clip was shown 12,795 times on television.

The top ten advertisers as revealed by BARC

According to BARC, the top ten advertisers are: BJP, Netflix, Trivago, Santoor Sandal, Dettol Liquid, Soap, Wipe, Colgate Dental Cream, Dettol Toilet Soaps, Amazon Prime Video, and Roop Mantra Ayur Face Cream.

What this means for the upcoming elections

A media agency expert who follows political advertising told ET the assembly elections are being viewed as 'kingmaker' polls, as they will set the tune for the big battle in 2019. "That the results of these elections will have an impact on the general elections is the premise on which political parties might be working," the person was quoted by the daily.

Before general elections, numbers likely to see jump

Partho Dasgupta, the CEO, BARC India, said television as a medium reached more people, hence everyone from consumer companies to political parties tapped it. Ashish Bhasin, Chairman, and CEO, South Asia, Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN), added the election season has just begun and the numbers are most likely to see a jump ahead of general election. Parties hire media agencies to plan their campaigns.
