    What's the story

Congress President Rahul Gandhi today announced that his party will ensure minimum universal basic income for poor people in the country if voted to power in the Lok Sabha polls this year.

He also said that no government in the world has ever launched such an initiative to eradicate poverty.

He was speaking at the Kisaan Abhaar Sammelan in Chhattisgarh's Raipur.

    Here's more.

'Congress-led government is going to give Minimum Income Guarantee'

"The Congress has decided to take a historic decision... The Congress-led government is going to give Minimum Income Guarantee. This means each poor person in India will have a minimum income. This means there will be no hungry, poor people in India," Rahul Gandhi said

    Two Indias

PM Modi, BJP trying to create two Indias: Congress chief

Announcing the Congress's decision, Rahul Gandhi said that after returning to power, the party will implement the initiative across all the states in the country.

He also added that the Congress doesn't want to create two Indias, accusing PM Narendra Modi-led government of creating one India of the Rafale scam, Anil Ambani, Nirav Modi, Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi and the other of "poor farmers."

    Thanksgiving rally

The Congress's Kisaan Abhaar Sammelan in Raipur

Congress is holding the Kisaan Abhaar Sammelan in Raipur to express its gratitude to Chhattisgarh's people, especially farmers, for bringing the party back to power after 15 years in the state.

In a landslide victory, Congress won 68 of 90 seats in Chhattisgarh Assembly polls held November last year.

Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and senior Congress leader PL Punia also attended the event.

    Farm loan waiver

Rahul Gandhi also distributed loan waiver certificates to farmers

A large number of farmers from across Chhattisgarh, including the Maoist-hotbed of Bastar, were expected to participate in the Kisaan Abhaar Sammelan.

At the event, Rahul Gandhi also distributed loan waiver certificates to beneficiary farmers as promised.

Before the Assembly elections last year, the Congress chief had promised that his party would waive off farm loans if voted to power in the state.
