Bhupesh Baghel: News

Bhupesh Baghel is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the current Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. Baghel entered politics in the early 1980s and became the Vice-President of its Madhya Pradesh unit in 1994-95. He was first elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Patan constituency in 1993. He retained the seat in the 1998 elections and served as a Cabinet minister under Chief Minister Digvijay Singh. After the formation of Chhattisgarh in 2000, Baghel became the new state’s first Minister of Revenue Rehabilitation, Public Health Mechanics, and Relief Work. He was elected from Patan in the 2003 state elections and served as the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Chhattisgarh Assembly. Though he lost his seat in the 2008 elections, Baghel was re-elected in the 2013 Assembly polls. Appointed as President of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) in 2014, Baghel led his party to a massive win in the 2018 state elections, thereby ending the 15-year reign of Raman Singh-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government. Baghel became the third Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh in 2018.
