Iltija Mufti: News

The year 2019 saw Jammu and Kashmir losing its special status granted by the Indian Constitution. To prevent law and order issues, the administration decided to put most of the political leaders in the state under house arrest. Among those detained was former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Despite not being allowed to use electronic devices, Muftis’s Twitter handle became active a month after her detention. It was Iltija Mufti, a Warwick graduate, and daughter of Mehbooba Mufti, who used her mother’s handle to criticize the administration’s actions. Born in 1987 in Srinagar, Iltija Mufti moved to Delhi at a young age for educational purposes. She did her bachelor’s in political science from Sri Venkateswara College. For her master’s, she joined the University of Warwick. After the completion of her master’s in international relations, she joined the High Commission of India in London as an administrative officer. She returned to Kashmir after a brief stint in Australia with the Australia India Institute. After her first tweet from her mother’s Twitter handle in 2019, she constantly tweeted about alleged rights violations in the former state. She was soon considered a voice of those Kashmiris whose voices went unheard.
