What's the story

The Bihar police said on Monday that they have arrested a man who posted an obscene tweet featuring a morphed picture of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress' national secretary for UP East. The accused, identified as Yogi Surajnath calls himself a bhakt of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but BJP claimed he had no connection to the party. Surajnath was arrested from his residence.

The case

Surajanth's tweet invited complaint, police acted accordingly

After Gandhi was given the top post, she came at the receiving end of a vitriolic attack. The trolls must have assumed they would get away but Surajnath's case serves as an example. His post dated January 30 prompted social activist Shaheen Syed to file a complaint. Syed wrote an email to Economic Offence Unit (EoU) and also shared details of Surajnath's Twitter account.

Arrest

Surajnath was arrested from Katihar

The cyber cell of police acted on Syed's complaint and registered a case on February 2. The case was registered under Sections 420/29 (A) and IT Act 67. Subsequently, Surajnath was traced to Katihar and district police arrested him. He was produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody. Meanwhile, BJP district chief Manoj Rai claimed Surajnath had no association with the party.

Action

Meanwhile, Mahila Congress will file police complaint across India

Notably, Congress has decided to do something about the malicious attack on Gandhi. On Monday, the president of All-India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev, said the woman's wing will file a police complaint in all state capitals against the smear campaign. "To counter this (attack), Mahila Congress has decided to file an FIR through all states on February 4, 2019," Mahila Congress tweeted.

Comments

BJP leaders have been making problematic statements about Gandhi

Notably, Gandhi's plunge into active politics has brought out worst of some BJP leaders. Vinod Narain Jha, BJP minister in Bihar, stoked a controversy by saying Gandhi was just a pretty face and beauty doesn't help in getting votes. BJP MP Kailash Vijayvargiya said Congress was fielding candidates having 'chocolaty faces' as it didn't have leaders. Later, he blamed media for distorting his statement.

Return

Finally! Priyanka Gandhi returns to Delhi

In a recent development, Gandhi landed in Delhi on Monday evening. She is expected to visit brother Rahul Gandhi and discuss important issues. Reports claimed the brother-sister duo will attend the ongoing Kumbh Mela and address a press conference in Lucknow after that. They could visit Prayagraj on Basant Panchami, February 9. It won't be wrong to anticipate a lot of political fireworks!
