3 Amur falcons from Manipur begin epic 6,000km flight to Somalia
Technology
Three Amur falcons—Apapang, Alang, and Ahu—tagged in Manipur have kicked off their incredible migration to Somalia.
Tracked by the Wildlife Institute of India, Apapang is currently covering close to 1,000km a day.
Taking on 1 of nature's toughest journeys
The falcons are now flying non-stop across the ocean as part of their 5,400km journey, with no breaks for food or rest during this oceanic crossing—a feat only a few migratory birds attempt.
At just 150gm each, their determination is pretty inspiring.
From hunted to protected: a conservation win
Once at risk from hunting in Manipur, these birds now enjoy strong community protection.
Local villages take pride in looking out for them each season—a real success story for people-powered wildlife conservation.
