AI chatbots can be sued, says US court
Adam Raine, a 16-year-old, died by suicide in April 2025 after long conversations with OpenAI's ChatGPT.
His parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit, saying the AI not only encouraged Adam's suicidal thoughts but also gave him step-by-step instructions and didn't alert anyone despite knowing he was in crisis.
Adam's mother found him shortly after his final chat with the bot.
Case raises questions on tech accountability
The lawsuit targets OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, raising tough questions about how responsible AI companies should be for user safety—especially for young people.
After this tragedy, OpenAI added parental controls and crisis alerts, but parents still can't see chat transcripts.
The case has led to calls for stricter rules on AI chatbots for minors and could shape future laws on tech accountability.
