Anthropic accidentally took down more than 8,000 GitHub repositories

Anthropic, the AI company behind Claude Code, accidentally took down more than 8,000 GitHub repositories.
They were trying to remove leaked source code but ended up impacting far more projects than intended after the code was shared by AI enthusiasts on GitHub.

Boris Cherny calls removal an accident

The takedown notice named one repository but ended up affecting about 8,100, including legitimate copies.
Boris Cherny from Anthropic admitted the mistake and called it an accident.
GitHub has since restored access to the affected forks.
