This iOS 18 feature makes your iPhone more theft-resistant
Apple is set to launch its latest software update, iOS 18, on September 16. The new version will introduce an enhanced Activation Lock feature that extends to individual iPhone components such as batteries, cameras, and displays, according to 9to5Mac. This security measure is designed to prevent unauthorized repairs using parts from other iPhones and discourage the resale of stolen iPhone parts.
Activation Lock links components to owner's Apple account
The enhanced Activation Lock feature in iOS 18 will link specific iPhone components to the original owner's Apple Account. This security measure was activated with the Release Candidate build of iOS 18. When an iPhone detects a replacement part, it prompts the user for the Apple Account password of the original owner to verify its authenticity.
Unverified parts will have limited functionality
Without proper authentication, an iPhone will limit the functionality of the unverified part. This makes it more difficult for stolen components to be used or sold. The enhanced Activation Lock feature is Apple's response to a growing market where stolen iPhones are sold off in pieces. By extending this feature to individual components, Apple aims to close a major loophole that allows the gray market for iPhone parts to thrive.
iOS 18 will block calibration of parts under Activation Lock
If a device under repair detects a component associated with an Apple Account under Lost Mode or Activation Lock, it will block the part's calibration, thereby limiting its usage. Some users have confirmed that the system requires Apple ID credentials to unlock and authenticate used components. This additional layer of security is expected to further deter theft and unauthorized use of iPhone parts.
The new feature is exclusive to iPhones
The final version of iOS 18, set for public release on September 16, will be compatible with iPhone XR and later models. The enhanced Activation Lock feature is exclusive to iPhone components. iPads running iPadOS 18 will not be affected by this new system, ensuring that the security measure specifically targets the issue of stolen iPhone parts.
