China fast-tracks Shenzhou-22 launch after space station mishap

Technology

China is moving up the launch of its Shenzhou-22 spacecraft by six months to support the Tiangong space station.
This quick change comes after Shenzhou-20 is suspected to have been hit by space debris, forcing its crew to extend their stay until November 14, 2025, and return on Shenzhou-21.
The new uncrewed mission is all about keeping the current crew safe and providing a backup return vessel for the current crew.

Why it matters

Shenzhou-22 will bring fresh supplies and equipment to Tiangong, which usually houses three astronauts but can temporarily fit six.
Its early arrival gives the crew a much-needed backup plan while China figures out how to safely undock and deorbit the damaged Shenzhou-20 over the Pacific Ocean.
