Following NVIDIA's footsteps, Intel to develop GPUs for AI, gaming
What's the story
Intel has announced its plans to enter the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, a domain currently ruled by NVIDIA. The announcement was made by Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan during the Cisco AI Summit on Tuesday. Unlike traditional CPUs, GPUs are specialized processors used for gaming and artificial intelligence model training.
Project leadership
Intel hires top GPU engineers from Qualcomm
The new GPU project will be led by Kevork Kechichian, Intel's executive vice president and general manager of the data center group. The company hired him in September as part of a wave of new engineer-focused hires. In January, Eric Demmers was also brought on board for this initiative. He previously worked at Qualcomm for over 13 years as a senior vice president of engineering.
Strategic approach
Intel's GPU strategy to focus on customer needs
Tan emphasized that Intel's GPU strategy will be guided by customer demands and needs. This suggests a more tailored approach to product development. The move is part of Intel's broader effort to turn around its fortunes in the tech industry.
