Gemini AI can now control your Android device
Google's Gemini AI is getting a big upgrade—it'll soon be able to handle tasks on your Android by actually tapping, typing, and scrolling inside apps for you.
Right now, this feature is in beta testing (Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2) and tucked away under Settings > Apps > Special app access.
You can choose how much control Gemini has
For now, it appears on Pixel 10 devices we've tested but not on the Pixel 9 series, and it works exclusively with Gemini.
You get to decide how much control Gemini has: Always allow, Ask every time (default), or Don't allow.
If the AI gets stuck or goes off track, you can step in and take over anytime.
Gemini might mess up sometimes
Google's being upfront—Gemini might mess up sometimes.
They recommend not letting it handle sensitive stuff like logging in or making payments, and definitely don't rely on it during emergencies.
Google Assistant is being phased out
Google plans to gradually phase out Google Assistant on most Android phones and tablets, but the company has not provided a timeline.
Rollout has already started on Android Auto in 45 languages and supports more natural voice conversations plus deeper app control.
