Gemini's new tool lets you make precise image AI edits
What's the story
Google has introduced a new feature in its Gemini AI tool, making image editing easier than ever. The update follows the successful integration of the new Nano Banana Pro model into Gemini. The latest tool is an intuitive image annotation tool that lets users circle over images for edits and analysis.
User interaction
New feature enhances user experience
At the moment, the new feature is available for select users globally. When you add an image to a conversation, either by clicking a photo or using one from the gallery, a small prompt appears. Tapping on the attached image brings up a color palette, letting you scribble or circle areas for changes. The default option is "Sketch," but there's also a "Text" option to describe edits directly on images.
Cross-platform availability
Markup tool extends to desktop/web experience
The markup tool has also been integrated into the desktop/web experience of the Gemini chatbot. This means users can enjoy the same editing capabilities across different platforms. The new feature not only allows for refining or modifying images but also helps identify people and objects by circling over them. However, its accuracy may vary as seen in some demos where identification wasn't always precise.
Rollout strategy
Feature's availability and future prospects
The new feature is being rolled out with the Google app (version 16.49.59), even on free Gemini accounts. If you have the same version and don't see it, force-stopping the app or waiting for a broader rollout might be your only options. As of now, there's no official online documentation for this feature as Google seems to be testing it on a limited basis.
