Google Maps adds 10 new features just for India users
What's the story
Google has announced a major update for its Maps service in India, introducing 10 new features. The enhancements include Gemini AI integration, proactive alerts, and improved travel management capabilities. The updates are aimed at making daily commuting safer and more intuitive for users across the country.
AI integration
Gemini AI integration for hands-free navigation
The most notable update is the integration of Gemini, Google's advanced AI model, into Maps. This feature provides a conversational, hands-free driving experience. Users can ask for directions to the nearest petrol pump or inquire about parking at their destination. Gemini can even connect with other apps (with user permission) to add calendar events while navigating.
Local insights
Gemini also offers practical tips about places
Along with navigation, Gemini also offers practical tips about places by analyzing Maps reviews and web content. For instance, when looking at Delhi's Dilli Haat on Maps, it might say "It's okay to bargain for prices" or highlight popular stalls. Users can also ask specific questions about a place and get relevant answers from Gemini by scanning through reviews, photos, and web data.
Safety features
Alerts for accident-prone areas and speed limits
Google Maps is also adding new safety updates and data partnerships for India's road network. The app will now visually and audibly alert users as they approach accident-prone areas, encouraging safer driving. This feature is being rolled out in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, and Faridabad. Another update shows the official speed limit for a road next to the speedometer based on local traffic authority data.
Disruption notifications
Real-time updates on road disruptions and delays
Google Maps will now automatically alert users about major disruptions or delays on their route, even if they're not actively navigating. The feature is being rolled out for Android users on major roads in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. A new partnership with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will provide real-time information about highway road closures/repairs and wayside amenities like restrooms/petrol stations.
Travel enhancements
New features for 2-wheeler users
Google Maps is also introducing unique utility updates for two-wheeler users in India. The app now lets you customize your navigation icon by choosing from different types of two-wheelers (motorbikes, sports bikes, scooters) and eight colors. It will also provide clearer, hands-free audio guidance in nine Indian languages for flyovers to help users navigate complex maneuvers confidently.
Ticket management
Metro ticket booking in Maps
Google Maps now supports metro ticket booking in Delhi, Bangalore, Kochi, and Chennai. Android users can save purchased tickets directly to Google Wallet and access them from Maps. The feature eliminates the need to search through galleries or messages for tickets.
