Google Messages gets a design overhaul: Check what's new
What's the story
Google has updated the account menu in its Messages app, bringing it in line with other first-party apps. The change was long overdue as the account menu was one of the last non-Material 3 Expressive elements in Google Messages. Now, tapping on your profile picture at the top right corner will open a full-screen page instead of an overlay.
Enhanced functionality
Revamped layout puts all options on a single page
The revamped account menu comes with a new layout, putting all options on a single page. The first section under "More from this app" gives you access to Your profile, Archived messages, Spam & blocked messages, Mark all as read function and Device pairing. The second section includes options for managing your data in Messages, adjusting settings and seeking help or feedback.
Implementation details
Account switcher similar to other 1st-party apps
The account switcher on top of the revamped menu is similar to other first-party apps, but its necessity in Google Messages is debatable. The redesigned account menu is being widely rolled out with the latest version of Google Messages (20250922_00_RC00+), both on stable and beta channels. Notably, Google Contacts has also been updated with a Last sync indicator and settings.
App integration
Other Google apps updated with new account menu
Most Google apps now feature the account menu, including Gemini which was recently updated. However, there are some exceptions like Pixel-exclusive apps and the Play Store. The latter is expected to get the update soon. The move is part of Google's effort to unify its app interfaces and improve user experience across all platforms.
