Google Meet now available on Android Auto
What's the story
Google has officially announced the rollout of its popular video conferencing service, Google Meet, for Android Auto. The feature is enabled by default and will work automatically when your phone is connected to a compatible Android Auto head unit. The full rollout is expected to be completed by the end of this month, so if you haven't seen it on your car yet, you can expect it soon.
User experience
Initial setup and integration
When using Google Meet for the first time on Android Auto, users will have to open and restart the Google Meet app on their device. This is a one-time requirement for seamless integration with Android Auto. The interface is similar to other calling apps, with tabs for "Scheduled" meetings and call history. However, video feeds are not available during calls for safety reasons.
Feature overview
Interface and features
Google Meet on Android Auto features a "Scheduled" tab for upcoming meetings from your calendar and a "History" tab for recent calls. The app handles meeting links automatically, provided they're already in the user's calendar before connecting to Android Auto. Once a call starts, the phone goes into "On-the-go" mode that limits certain options, disables the camera, and simplifies the interface to minimize distractions.
Access restrictions
Limitations and availability
Google Meet on Android Auto shows instant meeting links in the "Scheduled" tab, which could make joining a call difficult unless it's already added directly to the calendar before connecting. The feature is currently available with Google Meet v361.0.92 and Android Auto v16.8, both of which are widely rolling out now.
