Google Password Manager now syncs passkeys across multiple devices
Google has introduced a significant update to its Password Manager, enabling users to synchronize their passkeys across various devices. Previously, this feature was exclusive to Android, limiting its cross-device functionality. Users could transfer passkeys to other devices but only by scanning a QR code. The latest update extends this feature to Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.
ChromeOS and iOS support on the horizon
Google is currently beta testing the passkey saving feature for ChromeOS, indicating that this functionality will be available soon. The tech giant has also announced plans to extend support to iOS devices in the near future. Once a passkey is stored, it automatically synchronizes with other devices using Google Password Manager. This data is end-to-end encrypted for enhanced security.
Understanding passkeys and their use
A passkey, different from a traditional password, is a digital credential that allows users to access an account without needing a password. Google has been incorporating passkeys into its software suite since last year. The update also enhances the security of passkeys on Google Password Manager by introducing a six-digit PIN required when using passkeys on new devices.
Enhanced layer of security to passkeys
The introduction of a six-digit PIN aims to prevent unauthorized access to an account, even if someone has obtained the digital credentials. Google passkeys are not only compatible with the company's productivity software but also work with Amazon, PayPal, and WhatsApp.
