Google AI now turns your prompts into usable tools
What's the story
Google has launched a new feature called Generative UI, which lets its artificial intelligence (AI) models create interactive interfaces from any user prompt. Unlike traditional static responses that provide text or predefined layouts, the Generative UI creates dynamic environments tailored to the intent of the request. The tech giant is introducing this capability through experiments in its Gemini app and AI Mode in Google Search.
Functionality
How does Generative UI work?
Generative UI works by creating a complete user experience on the fly. When a user inputs a prompt, the AI model generates a customized interface with tools, simulations or structured layouts for exploration, learning or task completion. Google's implementation relies on three main components: access to tools like image generation and web search; detailed system instructions guiding layout and coding; and post-processing steps refining output before delivery.
User preference
Generative UI's performance and use cases
Google's evaluations show that, when ignoring generation speed, users prefer generative UI outputs over standard text or markdown responses. The system understands intent and builds interfaces for different use cases, from educational content to planning workflows. This capability is now available in the Gemini app through dynamic view and visual layout features.
Feature details
Gemini app's dynamic view and visual layout features
Dynamic view leverages the model's coding capabilities to create a unique interface for each prompt, adjusting the experience based on context. Meanwhile, visual layout provides an immersive, magazine-style view with photos and modules. It generates sliders, checkboxes, and other filters for further customization of results.
Search enhancement
Google Search's integration of generative UI
Google is also integrating generative UI into its search engine through AI Mode. Users can request interactive explanations or visual breakdowns, with the system generating tools or simulations specifically for that query. This capability is currently being rolled out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US. The move marks a major step toward fully AI-generated user experiences across all Google products.
