Google wants to send AI chips into space by 2027
Google just announced Project Suncatcher—a plan to launch its AI processors (TPUs) into space on solar-powered satellites by early 2027.
The idea? Use the sun's energy and fast, space-based connections to power next-gen AI research, with two test satellites launching in partnership with Planet Labs.
Why does this matter?
If it works, Suncatcher could make running powerful AI way greener—think less carbon from Earth's data centers and more clean energy from the sun.
Google says these space-based clusters might even rival ground data centers by 2035, opening up new possibilities for tech without burning through Earth's resources.
How will it work?
The satellites will talk to each other using super-fast optical links and sit in stable formations that barely need adjusting.
Plus, Google has tested its latest TPU chips against harsh space radiation—they're built to last for years up there.
