IIT-Bombay-led team finds blood markers to detect diabetic kidney disease

Technology

IIT Bombay researchers, teaming up with Osmania Medical College and Clarity Bio Systems India, have discovered blood markers that can spot diabetic kidney disease much earlier than before.
This is a big step for India, where millions are living with diabetes or are prediabetic.

The goal is to develop simple blood tests

By studying 52 people—some healthy, some with diabetes and kidney disease—the team identified 26 blood metabolites that signal diabetes and seven that rise as kidney problems get worse (like arabitol and 2PY).
The goal now is to test these findings in more people and develop simple blood tests, which could help doctors catch kidney issues early and personalize treatment for patients.
