Mantis Space raises $10 million to build solar satellites
Technology
Mantis Space, a startup from New Mexico, just raised $10 million to build tech that beams solar power to satellites using lasers.
Investors were not named, and the funding will help the team develop prototypes.
Satellites that catch sunlight and shoot energy via lasers
Instead of relying on old-school batteries or chasing the sun, Mantis Space is building a constellation of satellites that catch sunlight and shoot energy via lasers to other satellites stuck in darkness.
Their military-grade lasers are 20% to 30% more efficient than regular sunlight charging.
Aiming for a prototype launch in 2028
The company is run by CEO Eric Truitt.
They're aiming for a prototype launch in 2028, with plans for the constellation to provide power to as many as 40 satellites at a time.
