Massive geomagnetic storm lights up the sky across US

Technology

A massive geomagnetic storm put on a show across the US Tuesday night into Wednesday, with northern lights glowing from New York all the way down to Texas and Tennessee.
This colorful sky event happens when solar particles hit our atmosphere—so if you missed it, keep an eye out tonight for another possible round!

Another strong burst expected by midday Wednesday

The Space Weather Prediction Center says several big bursts from the sun—called coronal mass ejections—triggered the storm, with magnetic forces "eight times stronger than what's normal," according to forecaster Shawn Dahl.
Another strong burst is expected by midday Wednesday.
Some areas had clouds blocking the view, but plenty of people still caught the spectacle and shared their excitement online.
