Microsoft Copilot will process your data in India by 2025-end
What's the story
Microsoft has announced its plan to roll out in-country data processing for Microsoft 365 Copilot interactions across 15 countries. The first four nations to benefit from this feature will be India, Japan, Australia, and the United Kingdom by the end of 2025. The move comes in response to global demands for sovereign control over business data and artificial intelligence (AI).
Global reach
Expansion to 11 more countries in 2026
In 2026, Microsoft plans to expand in-country data processing to customers in 11 more countries. These include Canada, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. The company explained this feature as one where Copilot interactions are processed within a country's borders through its own data centers.
Enhanced performance
Enhancing performance and ensuring compliance
The in-country data processing feature is designed to enhance performance by reducing latency, thereby offering a more responsive Copilot experience. This capability also gives governments an extra option for governance, security, and regulatory compliance. "Our principle is clear: your data, your control—wherever you operate," said Paul Lorimer, Corporate Vice President of Office 365 Enterprise and Cloud Engineering at Microsoft.
