Microsoft shutting down iconic games for older Windows users

What's the story

Despite having an option to upgrade to a fancier Windows 10, a number of users still use the older versions of Windows. Microsoft has already announced the end of security updates for the operating systems, and now, in the latest push, it is cutting off access to its internet games on those platforms. Here's all about the move.

Support

Ending support for Microsoft Internet games

In a recent post, Microsoft announced that its internet games will no longer be supported on Windows 7, XP, and ME. This means Backgammon, Checkers, Hearts, Reversi, Spades, and MSN Go will not work on these operating systems once the support ends. Notably, the end of support date varies with the OS being used.

Ending support

Windows XP, ME users will lose access this month itself

Going by Microsoft's post, Windows XP and ME users will lose access to the games - everything except MSN Go - just in a matter of days on July 31, 2019. Meanwhile, those running Windows 7 will be able to continue playing Backgammon, Checkers, Spades and MSN Go until January 22, 2020. So, there's still time if you are on Windows 7.

Motive

Clearly, Microsoft wants users to move on

Microsoft's move comes as it continues to give users reasons to shift to the more advanced Windows 10. To recall, the company has already announced that it will be ending security updates for Windows 7 on 14 January 2020, which is roughly a week before ending internet game support. Notably, Windows 7 was announced more than a decade ago.

Quote

Here's how Microsoft justified its move

"We truly appreciate all the time and passion you've put into Microsoft Internet Games," the company said, noting that "the time has come for us...to invest our resources towards more recent technologies so that we can continue to deliver great new experiences."

Option

But, you will have web versions of these games

Having said that, it is worth noting that you will have the option to try the web versions of these games if the support ends on your machine. This workaround may help in case you want to stay on the dated operating system, but we recommend updating to Windows 10 for a better and more seamless experience.
