You can now access your Windows PC on any device
Microsoft has introduced a new application, aptly named "Windows App," designed to enable users to operate Windows and its associated applications on various platforms. The tech giant announced that this innovative app will be available not only for Windows but also for macOS, iOS, and web browsers, and is currently in public preview for Android. The primary function of the Windows App is to replace the Microsoft Remote Desktop app across most of these platforms.
A unified solution for remote access
The Windows App is designed to provide a unified solution for accessing various Windows systems and applications. It allows users to connect to their own PCs with Remote Desktop access enabled, cloud-based Windows 365 and Microsoft Dev Box systems, as well as individually hosted apps provisioned by their work or school. Hilary Braun, Microsoft's Senior Product Manager for Windows 365, described the app as a "secure gateway to connect to Windows across multiple platforms."
Enhanced features and device management
The Windows App offers several enhancements over its predecessor, including simplified account switching and improved device management for IT administrators. It also supports the version of Windows 365 designed for frontline workers and Microsoft's "Relayed RDP Shortpath," which can enable Remote Desktop on networks that typically don't permit it. These upgrades aim to streamline user experience and provide more efficient remote access to Windows systems.
Windows app replaces Remote Desktop Connection on multiple platforms
On macOS, iOS, and Android platforms, the Windows App will completely replace the existing Remote Desktop Connection app. Users with Remote Desktop installed will see it updated to the new Windows App via an upcoming update. However, on Windows itself, the Remote Desktop Connection will remain available while the Windows App will be used for Microsoft's other services. This change aims to provide a more seamless transition for users across various operating systems.
