Solar storm sends ISS astronauts into safe mode
A huge solar storm hit Earth in November 2025, lighting up the skies with amazing auroras but also sending a wave of radiation toward Earth and into space, affecting satellites and the ISS.
While we got a light show, astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) had to take extra precautions since that radiation can be dangerous up there.
How the ISS crew stayed safe
To keep everyone protected, Russian cosmonauts moved into the Destiny lab module—its thick walls offer better shielding from radiation.
US and Japanese crew members stuck to their usual quarters but were told to avoid certain parts of the station for now.
This whole situation is a reminder of why monitoring space weather and having solid safety plans are so important for anyone living and working off-Earth.
