These custom Nike sneakers let you play Super Nintendo games
What's the story
Designer Gustavo Bonzanini has created a unique pair of sneakers called AIR SNES, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Super Nintendo's launch in Japan. The heavily customized Nike Air Max 90s are inspired by other gaming-themed shoes like Bull Airs's ShoeBoys. But what sets Bonzanini's creation apart is that it doubles as a functional retro console, merging '90s fashion with modern technology.
Design innovation
AIR SNES: A blend of retro gaming and sneaker culture
Instead of trying to fit the Super Nintendo's electronics into a wearable shoe, Bonzanini chose to go the emulation route. He used a compact Raspberry Pi Zero W, which has enough power to run 16-bit SNES games using a customized RetroPie emulator. The entire electronic setup, including a battery capable of powering up to 30 minutes of gameplay, is housed inside the tongue of the sneaker for easy access and convenience.
Gaming features
AIR SNES sneakers: A retro gaming experience
The Raspberry Pi Zero W comes with an integrated Mini HDMI port, but Bonzanini added a small analog converter to connect the AIR SNES to a TV using retro RCA cables. The sneakers also support an original SNES gamepad, which Bonzanini upgraded with an 8BitDo Mod Kit for wireless Bluetooth connectivity. This way, you can enjoy your favorite classic Nintendo games without any hassle of wires or cords.
Unique piece
AIR SNES: A 1-off creation
Given the growing popularity of retro gaming nostalgia and sneaker culture, Bonzanini's AIR SNES could easily become a hit if mass-produced. However, it is worth noting that this unique piece is just a one-off creation with no plans for commercialization. The designer has successfully blended two seemingly different worlds into one innovative product that pays homage to the past while embracing modern technology.
