What's the story

Jeff Dean, a long-serving executive and former chief scientist at Google, has explained his decision to leave the tech giant after 27 years. He is now focused on building his own artificial intelligence (AI) startup, Discovery Loop. Speaking at Stanford University earlier this month, Dean said advancements in cloud computing have enabled small teams to take on ambitious AI projects without needing huge infrastructure investments.

Departure details

Shifting landscape in AI development

Dean described his departure from Google as an emotional one.

While he is optimistic about Google's future AI plans, including its Gemini models, the chance to create a focused company around science and engineering automation ultimately swayed him.

He said that today's startups can leverage cloud providers like Google for the computing power needed for AI development instead of building their own infrastructure.

Startup vision

Discovery Loop's mission and focus areas

Discovery Loop's mission is to automate the scientific research process, from proposing and implementing experiments to analyzing results.

The company is set up as a public benefit corporation and may prioritize decisions that serve broader societal interests over maximizing financial returns.

It plans to build AI systems that can tackle some of the world's biggest scientific and engineering problems in fields like neuroscience and nuclear security.

Funding support

Funding and investor support for Discovery Loop

Discovery Loop has already secured funding from investors such as Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Alphabet is also a founding investor and cloud partner.

Reports indicate that Dean is in talks to raise $1 billion at a valuation of around $10 billion.

Despite the strong backing, he acknowledged that starting a new company comes with uncertainty but also makes the journey exciting.
