What's the story

Hasan Mahmud, a young talent from Bangladesh, immediately made a mark on Day 1 of the 1st Test against India in Chennai. Despite being relatively new to the international cricket scene with just three Tests under his belt, the 24-year-old pacer demonstrated exceptional skill. He dismissed top-order batters Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (6), within the initial 10 overs of play.

Mahmud perturbs India's top order

Taskin Ahmed started the proceedings for Bangladesh, with Mahmud joining him from the other end. While Indian openers Rohit and Jaiswal negotiated the Bangladesh seamers under cloudy conditions, Mahmud drew first blood by removing the Indian skipper in the sixth over. In his very next over, the right-arm seamer dismissed Gill for an eight-ball duck. Mahmud then sent back Kohli to reduce to India to 34/3 inside 10 overs.

Debut performance

Mahmud's debut and early international career

Mahmud, Bangladesh's right-arm pacer, made his Test debut against Sri Lanka earlier this year. Despite Bangladesh's loss in both Tests, he left a mark by recording six wickets in the 2nd game. He continued this form into Bangladesh's historic 2-0 series victory over Pakistan on their home turf. Mahmud took eight wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second Test.

Career journey

Early career and rise to prominence

Mahmud hails from Laxmipur and began his cricketing journey playing age-group cricket for the Chattogram Under-16 team in 2015. At the 2019 Under-19 World Cup, he snapped up nine wickets from six matches at an average of 19.33. This performance resulted in his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in March 2020. He entered the national team on the back of impressive performances in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL).
