What's the story

Newcastle United's centre-back Sven Botman is set to miss around eight weeks due to a knee injury. The 25-year-old Netherlands international had returned in January after a 10-month absence due to an anterior cruciate ligament tear in March 2024. However, he has now injured his other knee and will need to undergo surgery. This comes as a huge blow for the Magpies ahead of a crucial Carabao Cup final and their push in the Premier League.

Manager's statement

Howe reveals Botman's injury details

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe gave an update on Botman's condition. He said that the defender was close to full fitness ahead of the Brighton game on March 2 but felt discomfort in his knee the day before. Howe confirmed that Botman has been feeling similar discomfort this week and will need a small operation to clear out some fluid from his knee.

Team updates

Botman joins other injured players

Botman will be missing for about two months, joining Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon on the unavailable players' list. Hall is ruled out for the remainder of the season with a foot injury, while Gordon was sent off in Newcastle's FA Cup fifth-round defeat by Brighton last weekend. He will be missing the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16.
