Police close rape case against Neymar citing lack of evidence
The Brazilian Police have closed the alleged rape case against Brazilian footballer, Neymar Jr., citing lack of evidence. The decision would be forwarded to the prosecutors. And, they would have 15 days to further evaluate the case. The final ruling would only be made by a judge, while Sao Paulo Police would hold a press conference on Tuesday. Here are the details.
Brazilian woman accused Neymar of raping her in a hotel
In the month of May, Brazilian woman Najila Trindade accused Neymar of raping her in a hotel in Paris. Neymar categorically denied the allegations by releasing a video of his WhatsApp interaction with the woman. However, it further blew up the issue as the video was released without her consent, possibly breaking the Brazilian law. The issue hampered his preparations for the Copa America.
Najila reveals she is victim of both assault and rape
During a TV interview with a Brazilian channel, Najila revealed that she was a victim of both assault and rape by Neymar. She also accused him of "aggression together with rape". After police questioned Neymar, he appeared before them in Sao Paulo and denied the allegations again. The police also filed a defamation case against Najila, for possibly falsely setting up Neymar.
Najila slams police as corrupt post defamation lawsuit
Following the defamation lawsuit filed against her, Najila went on to slam the Brazilian Police for being corrupt. Notably, an alleged theft of a tablet from Najila's home complicated the case. The tablet contained a short video of the conclusive evidence of her rape. "The police are bought, aren't they? Or am I crazy?" she was quoted as saying to SBT during her interview.
A leaked video showed Najila slapping Neymar
Just a few weeks later, a video emerged on the internet, showing a recorded moment between Najila and Neymar in the Paris hotel. In the video, Najila is seen slapping Neymar first and continues to assault him, while Neymar pushes her back in order to defend himself. Although not conclusive enough what happened later, this video added to the controversy.
Neymar currently unsure about his PSG future
This development comes as a relief to Neymar, who is also enduring a rough period in his professional life. He is reportedly unhappy at Paris Saint-Germain and is looking for a change. Although he has expressed his desire to return to Barcelona, it remains to be seen how things materialize. Meanwhile, he is yet to join PSG on their pre-season tour.
