Priority is to finish 2019/20 season after Euro 2020 delayed
The Euro 2020 which was supposed to be held in the summer of 2020, was postponed by a year in relation to the coronavirus pandemic. Following the move by the UEFA, England's Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham has said "everyone's priority is to finish this season." Here's further updates on what Bullingham went on to say.
There are doubts regarding completion of the 2019-20 season
The major divisions in England including the Premier League and Championship were postponed until April in wake of the deadly virus. However, the manner in which the virus has crippled one and all, there were doubts regarding the completion of the 2019-20 season. There is a possibility that the season may be deemed null and void.
FA hopes to finish the 2019-20 season
"That's one of the main reasons for delaying the Euros, to allow a window that, if the virus gets under control, there will be a window to potentially finish the season. At the moment, we don't know what's going to happen. We're planning every eventuality, so that we can react. The most important thing at the moment is people's health," said Bullingham.
'FA building up a contingency for every different eventuality'
"Clearly there are different scenarios, if you try and finish the season before the end of June and after it. At this moment in time, there are so many variables, we're building up a contingency for every different eventuality. Some are more complicated than others but the number one priority at the moment is the health of the nation," he added.
What are the options ahead for the FA?
If the virus continues to stay at its peak, then the major focus for everyone will be to keep everything else in the backdrop. With the Euro getting postponed, there will be an added time now for leagues to finish. If the situation improves, then things can be played behind closed doors. Or else, end the season as it is.
