What's the story

Mumbai Indians (MI) are reportedly in advanced talks to trade their star all-rounder Hardik Pandya to Punjab Kings (PBKS). The deal would see left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh head the other way. According to ESPNcricinfo, both franchises have shown interest in the trade and are now seeking written consent from the players involved. This comes after a disappointing IPL 2026 season for MI, where they finished ninth.

Player negotiations

Hardik set to leave MI

Hardik had reportedly expressed his desire to leave MI after IPL 2026.

The franchise held talks with almost all teams, except Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), for a possible trade.

After a disappointing season, it was clear that MI needed another fast bowler alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

While Trent Boult underperformed last season, Arshdeep could be the ideal replacement due to his all-phase bowling skills.

Deal

Hardik-Arshdeep trade nears completion

As per Cricbuzz, the trade deal is nearing completion, with the two franchises having exchanged Expressions of Interest (EoIs) as part of the process prescribed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Notably, the deal will go ahead once the players give their consent and the financial terms (fees) are agreed upon and the contracts are exchanged.

Sources claimed the process appears to have reached its final stage, with the exchange of contracts remaining.

New beginnings

Arshdeep's impressive IPL stats

Arshdeep, who debuted for PBKS in 2019, has taken 111 wickets in 96 matches at an economy rate of 9.18.

This would be his first time playing for a team other than PBKS in the IPL.

His addition to MI could have a huge impact on the team's performance.

Notably, he was the Player of the Match in his last IPL game at Wankhede Stadium, MI's home ground.

Leadership changes

Hardik's captaincy record for MI

Hardik was traded to MI from Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of IPL 2024. He became captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.

However, under his leadership, MI finished last in 2024 and made the playoffs the next season but were inconsistent again in 2026.

In 39 matches with Hardik as captain since 2024, MI won 15 and lost 24, as per Cricinfo. Despite a poor win-loss ratio at MI, Hardik had a stellar record at GT with 22 wins and nine losses in 31 matches.

Management changes

MI revamp support staff ahead of IPL 2027

Ahead of IPL 2027, MI has revamped their team management with Kieron Pollard taking over as head coach.

The support staff now includes Robin Uthappa (batting coach), Mitchell McClenaghan (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach).

These changes are part of MI's strategy to improve their performance in the upcoming season.
