List of embarrassing records scripted in the 2019 World Cup

The ICC World Cup 2019 has entered its business end, as it has already witnessed a number of top clashes between world-class teams. While there were quite a few top moments, the tournament also saw several embarrassing records being scripted by some of the world's best players. These records, in no way, represent the valiant efforts put in by them. Here's more.

    India register unwanted record

India came up with a fighting performance, but went down by 31 runs against hosts England. While it was their opening loss of the tournament, but with it, they scripted an unwanted record. It was their 418th loss in the format, the joint-most by any team, along with Sri Lanka. However, their win percentage of 54.66 is the third best, among Test playing nations.

Dimuth Karunaratne scripts an unwanted record as captain

Scripting an embarrassing record does hurt, but it hurts even more if it is the captain. Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne was in this unfortunate situation after he was dismissed for a hapless duck against South Africa. While he became the second batsman to be dismissed for a duck off the opening ball of a World Cup game, he is the first skipper.

MS Dhoni's dwindling form earns him this record

Even former Indian captain MS Dhoni was at the receiving end of an unwanted record in this World Cup. Notably, he has been struggling to get runs in the past few matches. Since 2016, he has now registered the lowest strike-rate against spin, among players who have faced 500+ balls. He has a strike-rate of 61.58 and PJ Moor is next on the list.

    England and their inconsistent form

England were looking to script history by pulling off a record chase in the World Cup. Chasing a target of 349 against Pakistan, two English batsmen scored centuries, in the form of Joe Root (107) and Jos Buttler (103). However, they still succumbed to a 14-run loss, as they became the first team to lose a World Cup match despite having two centurions.
