Polish youngster Iga Swiatek completed the Sunshine Double with a win over Naomi Osaka in the Miami Open final. Swiatek tamed Osaka 6-4, 6-0 in what was a complete show. With this win, Swiatek has claimed 17 successive victories and a third consecutive title in 2022. She claimed her win in an hour and 17 minutes. Here are the details.

Youngest to win the Sunshine Double

As per WTA, Swiatek has joined an exclusive club by becoming only the fourth woman to win the Sunshine Double - titles at WTA 1000 Indian Wells and Miami in the same season. The likes of Stefanie Graf (1994 and 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005), and Victoria Azarenka (2016), all are the others. Notably, Swiatek, 20, is the youngest woman to pull off this accomplishment.

    Why does this story matter?

Swiatek was at her best in Miami, winning six successive matches to lift the crown. All her victories came in straight sets. Swiatek will officially be the new world No. 1 for the first time in her career. She is a highly deserving candidate for the same. 2022 has been exceptional for Swiatek as he chases history.

Swiatek's reaction after joining an elite list

After winning the Sunshine Double, Swiatek said she feels privileged. "I feel pretty privileged that I can be amongst those players, because I wouldn't even dream of it a few years ago" "I knew it's going to be tough playing these two tournaments in a row. I realized at the end it's just another match and I took it step by step," she added.

    Swiatek joins Serena and Wozniacki

As per WTA, Swiatek has now joined the Serena Williams (2013 - Miami, Madrid, Rome, Toronto) and Caroline Wozniacki (2010 - Montreal, Tokyo, Beijing) as the only players to win three-plus consecutive WTA 1000 titles in a single season. She became the first player to win 17 consecutive matches on hard courts in a single calendar year since Williams won 20 in 2015.

Swiatek has a 26-3 win-loss record this year

Swiatek started the season with a semi-final exit against Ashleigh Barty at the Adelaide International. She suffered another semis defeat against Danielle Collins at the 2022 Australian Open. In Dubai, she suffered a second-round exit. She won the Qatar Open, followed by Indian Wells, and Miami. Interestingly, Swiatek has a 26-3 win-loss record in 2022.

    Three successive WTA titles win

Swiatek's career-best winning streak has continued with her victory in Miami. All her 17 wins have come at the first three WTA 1000 events of the season. Swiatek claimed titles wins at WTA 1000 Doha, Indian Wells, and now Miami.
