Known as the "axeman" for the way he chopped the ball through the point, former cricketer Ijaz Ahmed was an unconventional yet effective batsman who played for Pakistan from 1986-2003. With a high backlift and a bottom hand-dominated grip, Ahmed was very strong on the backfoot. He made his international debut for Pakistan in an ODI against West Indies in 1986. A member of the 1992 World Cup-winning squad, Ahmed played 250 ODIs and scored 10 centuries. After the 1999 World Cup debacle, he was dropped from the team. Although he played well after a comeback, he was eventually dropped again. Capable of taking it to the bowlers, he was the second player to score 10 ODI centuries for Pakistan. His Test debut came in 1987 against India. However, Ahmed's Test career was full of inconsistencies. In the 92 Test innings he played, there were 33 instances where his score was in single digits and 54 instances where he scored below 20. However, Ahmed still had 12 Test centuries, and six of them came against the mighty Australians. He announced his retirement from cricket in 2003.
