IND-SA ODIs: Irfan Pathan backs Tilak Varma for number-four spot
What's the story
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has backed young talent Tilak Varma for the No. 4 position in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 15-member squad on Sunday, with KL Rahul as captain and Shubman Gill ruled out due to a neck injury. The team sees the return of Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad, while senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returns after missing the Australia tour.
Endorsement
Pathan's endorsement for Varma
Pathan believes that Varma, who has been batting in the middle order in T20Is, deserves a chance at No. 4. He said on his YouTube channel, "Watch out for Tilak Varma. The way he won the match against Pakistan in the T20 final and how he handled pressure in Asia Cup should have boosted his value." It must be noted that Shreyas Iyer, India's regular number four in the format, is unavailable due to an injury.
Performance
Varma's performance in Asia Cup 2025 final
Pathan also highlighted Varma's impressive performance in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, where he scored an unbeaten 69 at No. 4. This innings helped India secure a memorable five-wicket victory. Pathan said he would prefer to see Varma bat at No. 3 in T20Is but thinks the No. 4 slot in ODIs would suit him just as well.
Stats
Varma has played four ODIs
The 23-year-old Varma has played just four ODIs so far, with his last appearance coming in December 2023. 52 of his 68 ODI runs came in a solitary game. However, the southpaw boasts a solid List A record. He has returned with 1,724 runs at 45.36 in 44 games, with his strike rate being 90.49. The tally includes five tons and 10 fifties. In T20Is for India, he boasts 996 runs at 47.42.
Contenders
Who are the other contenders for the position?
Rahul, who usually bats at number five in ODIs, also boasts solid returns at four. Hence, he might promote himself in the batting order. Rishabh Pant, India's vice-captain in Tests, is the other strong contender for the vacant position. Washington Sundar can also be a suitable option if the team management opts for an extra bowling option. Notably, he owns solid batting numbers in Tests.
