What's the story

Mumbai's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) campaign has received a major boost with the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young Indian opener, who recently scored a century against South Africa in the third ODI, has confirmed his availability for the domestic side in the National T20 Championship. As per Cricbuzz, a senior Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official confirmed Jaiswal's participation on Sunday.

Past participation

Jaiswal's previous SMAT performance and absence

Jaiswal last played in the SMAT during the 2023-24 quarter-final. He missed out on the last edition due to national commitments. The 23-year-old has played a total of 28 matches in this tournament, scoring 648 runs at an average of 27 and a strike rate of 136.42. He has also scored three half-centuries in his SMAT career so far.

Participation status

Uncertainty over Rohit Sharma's participation in SMAT

There is still no clarity on whether Rohit Sharma will play in the SMAT. While reports have suggested his participation, MCA officials have not confirmed it yet. Earlier, team sources had indicated that Rohit would play in the T20 tournament, but as of Sunday morning, there was still no certainty about this. Like Jaiswal, Rohit was also part of India's ODI squad.

Tournament progress

Mumbai's current standing and upcoming matches in SMAT

Defending champions Mumbai, led by Shardul Thakur, are currently playing in Lucknow. They are at the top of the Elite Group A standings with five wins from six matches. The team has one league match remaining against Odisha on December 8. Two teams from each of the four Elite Groups will qualify for the Super League, which will be followed by a final between the top two sides of this league.
