What's the story

In what can be called a convincing performance, South Africa tamed hosts New Zealand in the T20I series opener at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The Kiwis put up a dismal show with the bat and were bowled out for a mere 91 while batting first. Though South Africa also lost a few early wickets, they eventually crossed the line without much hassle.

NZ innings

NZ's poor outing with the bat

The brilliance of SA's new-ball pacers had reduced the hosts to 36/5 in the powerplay. Skipper Mitchell Santner (15), James Neesham (26), and Cole McConchie (15) - the only NZ batters to score over 11 - tried to rescue the hosts. However, each of them threw away their starts. Owing to the same, the Kiwis were folded for just 91 in 14.3 overs.

Chase

How did the run chase pan out?

SA were also off to a poor start as two of their top-three batters - Tony de Zorzi (2) and Rubin Hermann (7) - bagged single-digit scores. However, debutant opener Connor Esterhuizen (45*) stayed till the end, and made sure there's now twist in the tale. Dian Forrester, another debutant, made an unbeaten 16 as SA sealed a seven-wicket win in 16.4 overs.

Mokoena

Mokoena shines on T20I debut

In a stunning debut, SA pacer Nqobani Mokoena delivered a brilliant spell in his maiden international assignment. The pick of the SA bowlers, Mokoena claimed 3/26 from 3.3 overs. The 19-year-old now has 19 wickets from 17 T20 matches. He averages 28-plus as his economy rate is above 9.5. Mokoena's maiden SA call-up came after a stellar campaign for Paarl Royals in SA20 2025-26.

SA bowlers

These SA bowlers also made a mark

Gerald Coetzee also impressed on his return from a long injury lay-off. He took 2/14 in three overs. Ottneil Baartman, the leading fast bowler in Betway SA20 history, also chipped in with impressive figures of two wickets for 22 runs (3 overs). Captain Keshav Maharaj, playing his 50th T20I for South Africa, claimed two wickets for 25 runs in his four-over spell.

Maharaj

Maharaj becomes third SA spinner with 50 T20I wickets

With his second and final wicket, Maharaj reached the milestone of 50 T20I wickets. Only Tabraiz Shamsi (89) and Imran Tahir (61) have taken more T20I wickets for SA among spinners, as per ESPNcricinfo. Maharaj averages a decent 26.30, as his economy rate reads 7.69 (BBI: 3/24). Against New Zealand, Maharaj owns three wickets from three T20Is at 27.33.

Esterhuizen

Fine debut for Esterhuizen

Esterhuizen made a 48-ball 45* in his maiden international game (2 fours, 2 sixes). He missed out on becoming the fourth SA batter with a fifty on T20I debut. The 24-year-old keeper-batter now has 771 runs from 40 T20 games at 25-plus. His strike rate is around 126 (50s: 3).
