Football: Race for Champions League spot heats up

Football: Race for Champions League spot heats up

Manchester City might have won the Premier League already but there is plenty of excitement still left in the most difficult football league of the world. The race for the top four spot is heating up as Chelsea made it interesting by beating Liverpool at the Bridge. It's just a matter of a few points and two more games.

Liverpool might lose the third spot

Chelsea's victory over Liverpool means the Reds are currently placed on 3rd spot with 72 points. Klopp's men have just one more game in hand against Brighton at Anfield on the final day of the season. Chelsea, on the other hand, have 69 points under their belt and will play two more games against Huddersfield and Newcastle.

Liverpool's more goals give them a cushion

Chelsea could win both the game and draw level with Liverpool, considering Klopp's men win their last game. Since Liverpool have a better goal difference as compared to Chelsea they should most likely make the top four. But if Brighton turn out to be stubborn on the final day of the Premier League, Chelsea could as well pip the Reds to a top-four finish.

Spurs could pip Liverpool to third place finish

Tottenham are currently placed 4th with 71 points and have two games in hand. Spurs have to play Newcastle and then take on Leicester on the final day. Both matches will be played at Wembley and Spurs have had a patchy run at home so far. If they manage two wins in two games they would pip Liverpool to third place.

Must win games for Chelsea while Spurs can't lose

Spurs need a minimum of 4 points to get to the top four, which means Mauricio Pochettino's men cannot afford to lose any of their games. Chelsea need 6 points and more goals to stand a chance of making the top four. Liverpool need 3 points in their last game to make it to the top four.
